For years, volunteers have helped shape the Museum of Indigenous People through their time, care, knowledge, patience, and generosity. Their work is part of the fabric of support that allows MIP to welcome visitors, care for its spaces, share exhibits, host events, grow programs, and continue serving the Prescott community. Every hour given helps strengthen a museum built around learning, respect, and connection.
Volunteers are often the first people visitors meet when they walk through the door. They help create the feeling of welcome and curiosity that stays with people long after they leave the museum. A greeting, a conversation, a helpful answer, or a few extra minutes spent with a guest can turn a museum visit into something more personal and memorable.
Volunteers Help Carry the Mission Forward
The Museum of Indigenous People’s mission is to instill understanding and respect for the Indigenous Cultures of the Southwest. That mission does not live only in exhibits, programs, or public events. It also lives in the people who help make those experiences possible, including the volunteers who give their time so others can learn, ask questions, and feel welcomed.
MIP volunteers have helped with visitor welcome, exhibits, auctions, events, collections support, cultural resource materials, programs, the gift shop, and many behind-the-scenes tasks that keep the museum moving forward. Some volunteers have been part of MIP for many years, while others have helped during one important event or season. All of them are part of the museum’s story, and their work continues to support the mission in visible and quiet ways.
The Work Volunteers Do Makes Growth Possible
A museum grows through more than buildings, exhibits, and calendars. It grows through people who care enough to show up, lend their hands, share their attention, and help create a place where visitors feel connected to something meaningful. Volunteers help create the steady support system that allows MIP to do more for visitors, members, students, artists, families, researchers, and community partners.
Their time helps the museum remain active, welcoming, and connected. Their work helps events run smoothly, gives staff needed support, and allows more people to experience the museum in a meaningful way. When volunteers help with an auction, a sale, a program, an exhibit, or a visitor experience, they are helping MIP build trust with the community and strengthen the museum’s role as a place of learning and respect.
What MIP Volunteers Help With
Volunteer opportunities may include welcoming visitors, helping with tours, supporting museum events, assisting in the gift shop, helping with exhibits and programs, preparing for special events, and lending a hand with behind-the-scenes museum projects. Some volunteers enjoy greeting visitors and helping them feel comfortable as they begin their visit. Others prefer supporting events, organizing materials, helping with setup, assisting with sales, or working on projects that keep the museum running.
You do not need special museum experience to join the MIP volunteer team. An eagerness to contribute, a willingness to learn, and a welcoming smile are a wonderful place to start. Earlier MIP volunteer posts have emphasized that volunteers do not need specialized expertise, only a desire to help and be part of the museum’s work.
What Volunteers Gain by Being Part of MIP
Volunteering at MIP is also an opportunity to become part of a meaningful community. Volunteers meet new people, learn more about the Indigenous Cultures of the Southwest, support artists and programs, help visitors discover something new, and take part in work that has a lasting purpose. For some, volunteering is a way to stay connected to the community; for others, it is a way to keep learning, share time in a useful way, or support a mission they believe in.
There is also something powerful about seeing the museum from the inside. Volunteers often witness the work behind the exhibits, events, programs, and visitor experiences. They see how much care goes into creating a place where Indigenous cultures are respected, shared, and better understood, and that becomes part of the reward of volunteering.
Thank You to MIP Volunteers, Past and Present
To every MIP volunteer, past and present: thank you for the hours you have given, the conversations you have had with visitors, and the care you have brought to the museum. Thank you for helping with events, exhibits, programs, auctions, sales, archives, collections support, the gift shop, and the work that does not always get seen. Your time and dedication have helped make MIP a welcoming place.
Thank you for supporting the museum’s growth and helping MIP continue its mission. You have helped make the Museum of Indigenous People what it is today, and your work continues to support what MIP can become. The museum is stronger because people have chosen to be part of its story.
